Young people can get first-hand experience in using a charcoal grill while learning about food science, food safety, meat science and food preparation in an after-school program offered at Grifton’s local library from 3-4 p.m. on Oct. 11 and Oct. 13.

N.C. State University developed this relatively new program, which is sponsored by the 4-H youth development and funded through a grant provided by the Junior League of Greenville.

It’s among several BBQ boot camps that have been held or are coming up in Pitt County.

This program addresses the additional skills required when grilling: practicing fire safety, ensuring food is cooked to the proper temperature and avoiding cross contamination.

It also provides a better understanding of where food comes from so that young people appreciate it more and are open to trying new and healthier foods, in addition to different ways to cook them.

Interested boys and girls age 10 and up can register for the program by contacting Grifton Public Library at gplibrary@msn.com or 524-0345.
