Deciding on where to hang out with your friends next? You might want to skip the likely snaking queues at Tanjong Pagar and opt for Omma Korean Charcoal BBQ at Holland Village or Bukit Timah.

Consider putting this Korean barbeque (KBBQ) spot on the list of potential hangout spots for you and your friends the next time you meet. KBBQ restaurants are great places for group gatherings. Savoury grilled meat, refreshing soju and a lively atmosphere, honestly what’s not to love?

Here’s what’s so different about Omma Korean Charcoal BBQ. For starters, as its name suggests, the restaurant uses natural wood charcoal fire to grill meat instead of the usual gas fire at other restaurants. It is also the only KBBQ restaurant in Singapore to provide different types of wood chips for your KBBQ.

There are 6 different types of wood to choose from: Apple wood, Pecan wood, Jarrah wood, Hickory wood, Cherry wood and Mesquite wood. Each type of wood provides a unique smokiness, creating a variety of flavours for each type of meat you order. Be sure to ask the staff for their expertise as well, as there are certain wood/meat pairings that work better than others. Do note that each change of wood costs an additional S$3, but for such a novel experience, it’s quite a reasonable price.

When it comes to KBBQ, my take is definitely that more is best. It is also almost an unspoken rule to order accompanying dishes like stews and steamed eggs, and Omma Korean Charcoal BBQ absolutely nails it when it comes to this. They have set menus like the Beef BBQ Set Menu (S$122) and Pork BBQ Set Menu (S$83) that come with a variety of meats, a choice of soybean paste stew or kimchi stew and steamed egg. Of course, free-flow side dishes and fresh vegetables are also included. These sets can easily satisfy three to four hungry people.

If you’re a fan of offal, you can also order their savoury and chewy Beef Large Intestine (S$22). It’s not very common in Singapore, so if you haven’t tried it and you don’t get squeamish at the thought of eating organs, you should definitely give it a try. If not, there are still a myriad of a la carte dishes to order like Seafood Pancake (S$22), Korean Spicy Rice Cake (S$25), Jjajang Ramen (S$15) and the list goes on.

Other than the distinctive grilling method and extensive menu, another point about Omma Korean Charcoal BBQ that makes it stand out to me is its Hanok style storefront, and spacious yet cosy interior. It gives off a sleek and clean yet homely vibe, making me feel nostalgic for a place that I’ve never been to.

If you’re looking for something a little different while still indulging in the familiar KBBQ favourites that we all love, you need to give Omma Korean Charcoal BBQ a good go!
